Proofing Auto-update: Original Filenames

Proofing Plugin users, this afternoon we’re pushing a free auto-update for anyone on auto-update capable sites. The focus of this update is to improve options for displaying original filenames if desired.

When we designed the Proofing plugin, we at first didn’t envision the need to use or display original pre-upload filenames. We thought that with our order reports, collection reports, and digital download zip files, that users would not need to directly tie images to their exact pre-upload filename. What we’ve found is that for the majority of our users that seems to be true, but there have been a number of you who still want to display the original filenames as some part of your workflow. So, to accommodate these users, we’ve added a handful of new capabilities.

Optionally display original filenames

With the latest build, you can now choose to display original filenames on both the gallery thumbnail view and individual image view. You can turn these options on in your Proofing gallery edit screen, as shown below:

If you enable display of original filenames, here’s what they look like on gallery thumbnail view:

And this is what they look like in single image view:

One small challenge to displaying these original filenames is that WordPress sometimes changes the filename of whatever file you upload, in order to prevent duplicate filenames. So you might have uploaded an image named “john-doe.jpg” from your computer, and WordPress might rename it to “john-doe2.jpg” if there were already a file named “john-doe.jpg” in the upload directory. WordPress doesn’t care what the filename was before you uploaded it, but we know for matching purposes, you do. So, we added some behind-the-scenes functionality to capture the filename exactly as it was before upload. So, once your site updates, any images you upload from that point on should have precise pre-upload original filenames available. Any images uploaded prior to the auto-update ProPhoto will try to guess the original filename, which it can do with about 98% accuracy.

Original filenames in the edit screen

We’ve also added the ability to view the original filenames in the Proofing gallery create/edit admin screen. To view these, select the large-size thumbnail view, and then toggle the new image filename control to view the filenames, as shown here:

select large thumbnail view and toggle the filename control to see filenames from the admin screen

Toggling to see filenames here will also help you understand better how Proofing re-orders your images by filename when you select “Reorder” => “By filename”.

Proofing-gallery post-specific options

Also in this auto-update, we’ve integrated “page-specific” options into Proofing galleries. So now, at the bottom of your Proofing gallery create/edit admin screens, you will see an area to make page-specific changes:

If you want to make site-wide customizations to things like whether the sidebar or footer or masthead appears on Proofing pages, you can do so under the standard ProPhoto customization areas for those respective options. Just check or uncheck the “Proofing Galleries” checkbox, like so:

And more…
